The Yorkshire Committee for the 2012 Games
Yorkshire Culture provide strategic management and support for the regional activity surrounding the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Yorkshire Committee for the 2012 Games represents the collaborative efforts of the main public sector bodies in the region to contribute to the once in a lifetime opportunity of the 2012 Games.
Represented on the Committee are Yorkshire Culture, Yorkshire Tourist Board, Sport England Yorkshire, Local Government Yorkshire and Humber, Yorkshire Forward and the Learning and Skills Council Yorkshire and Humber. Also represented are the Local Authorities of the five largest cities in the region; Sheffield, Leeds, York, Bradford and Hull.
The Yorkshire Committee for the 2012 Games held its inaugural committee meeting in May 2006 following the appointment of Martin Havenhand, the ex-Chief Executive of Yorkshire Forward and former Chief Executive of Bassetlaw Council as Executive Chair.
Martin represents the committee at LOCOG (The London Organising Committee for the 2012 Games) through the NRG (Nations and Regions Group).
Yorkshire Gold, the Committee - and the region’s - strategy for maximising the opportunities presented by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, began to be developed immediately through a series of focus groups and seminars to establish the regional priorities.
Yorkshire Gold’s main themes were targeted through Five Golden Opportunities. These were Sport, Communities, Culture, Tourism and Business. The Strategy also contained detailed Action Plans setting out, over the course of ten years how the opportunities and the legacy of the Games would be realised.
Yorkshire Culture led on the production of the strategy throughout the process.
