YORKSHIRE AND HUMBER’S 2012 BABIES CELEBRATE 2012 DAY AND THEIR BIRTHDAYS AT EUREKA!
Thursday 20th December was a special day for eleven London 2012 babies from the Yorkshire and Humber region. Not only was it their birthday but they are amongst 750 lucky babies who will have a role in the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
They were all born on 20th December 2004 – 20/12 day (20th day, 12th month). London 2012 promised children who were born on this day and registered with the London bid as part of the “Children’s Promise”, a role in the official celebrations.
Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee said “We won the Games for the young people in the UK and throughout the world, to get them inspired and involved in sport. I am delighted that the babies and their parents were able to visit Eureka and meet each other and the local representatives involved in maximising the benefits of the 2012 Games in Yorkshire and Humber. These babies have reserved a place in history and will play a part in what we hope will be the best Olympic Games and Paralympic Games ever.”
Gary Topp, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Culture and Yorkshire Representative on the London 2012 Nations and Regions Group “It’s wonderful that the babies will have the chance to be involved in the excitement of 2012. The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be a games for the whole of the UK and this is just one example of how the whole country are involved”
The babies celebrated their third birthday today, and will be seven in 2012. They could feature in the opening or closing ceremonies, in the team welcome ceremonies, or in the programme of cultural events that will light up the nation’s parks and squares. Seb and his team at London 2012 also sent a Birthday card to all 750 babies across the UK.
As the UK’s national children’s museum and one of Yorkshire’s most popular family attractions, Eureka! is the obvious choice for the 2012 Babies’ third birthday. The Babies and their families were treated to a tour of the Children’s Museum before heading to the under-5’s gallery, SoundGarden, to blow out the candles on their birthday cake and play party games.
Designed especially for the museum’s early years visitors, SoundGarden is an enchanted place where grass stems soar over and above your head! The Babies will have great fun creating beautiful butterflies, listening to the flowers sing and playing with stolen treasures in a Magpie’s Nest.
Director of Eureka! Leigh-Anne Stradeski said: “We are delighted to be hosting the 2012 Babies’ third birthday party at Eureka! and we are sure all the families will have a great day. Eureka! has already demonstrated its commitment to preparing children for a healthier future by creating ‘Mission: Active Future’, an interactive touring exhibition designed to engage primary age children in healthy living and described by Seb Coe as one of the most interesting and exciting projects of the last ten years. Eureka! fully supports the London 2012 Olympic Games and is pleased to be playing a part in their preparation.”
