Humber Culture launch C=ME2. Culture - Maximising Economic Growth
19th September 2006
“Culture in the UK helps to define and shape and deepen our lives as individuals. It also makes a significant contribution to our nation’s prosperity.”
- Gordon Brown, June 2006
The cultural sector is playing an increasingly important role in the renaissance of the Hull & Humber Ports City Region. Whether from an increase in tourism, community sports projects combating anti-social behaviour, libraries providing free internet access or digital business incubators aiding the survival to local media companies the cultural sector is working to benefit the prosperity of the City Region.
Humber Culture, a group comprising of the City Region’s cultural bodies, are holding an event at the Ropewalk Contemporary Art and Craft Centre in Barton-upon-Humber at 12pm on the 20th of September to launch the document “CULTURE - MAXIMISING ECONOMIC GROWTH” which makes the case for investment in the City Region’s cultural projects.
Among the speakers at the event are Anita Pace, Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Kingston Communications, John Godber, Artistic Director of Hull Truck Theatre and Gary Topp, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Culture. All of the speakers will reinforce the point that culture is an integral driver of economic prosperity and that to fully capitalise on the renaissance already taking place in the City Region more and continued investment is needed.
Gary Topp, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Culture, the Regional Cultural Consortium for Yorkshire and the Humber, said “The cultural sector is continually adding to the prosperity of the Hull and Humber Ports City Region. Current figures show that the cultural sector employs a staggering 38,000 people from over 5,000 businesses and is worth over £0.7bn, the sector is predicted to grow to over £1bn by 2010 and is one of the City Region’s key economic drivers.”
